As much as I love our bathroom, it was missing one thing…storage. We have the typical storage in our vanity and small, deep shelves next to my sink. With the existing shelves, I can really only store things in the front and that’s it for storage. We have no linen closet or closets/storage space near our bathroom that would work either. And of course, I use every last inch of my closet for my clothes.
The only wall space in the bathroom was an empty space above our bathtub. The previous owners had a towel bar installed that I removed shortly after moving in since I prefer towel hooks. Since removing the towel bar, I hung a large piece of Studio McGee x Target art. While I love the look of art in that space, I knew that it could be used more practically for storage.

I had looked at leaning shelves for the space to the left of the tub, but struggled finding one I really liked and wouldn’t be a hazard to the kids. One reason we needed more storage in this space is because we bathe the kids in our bath tub. We have extra towels, wash cloths, soap, and toys and that basket by the tub just wasn’t cutting it.
After ruling out a leaning shelf, I kept being drawn to floating shelves. I specifically love floating shelves in a white oak finish, and whenever I did a Google search, shelves from Ultra Shelf came up. They have many different finishes (in case white oak isn’t your jam) and you can customize width and length. I ordered the shelves in 14″x36″ in “Natural” and am so happy with the look and quality.
One thing I was looking forward to was styling the shelves (of course). I wanted to pull in some modern coastal, spa-like feels. It was a challenge to pull in the storage aspect and I could probably use them more functionally than I did, but I just can’t help myself.
At first, I placed a grapewood branch, but it took up too much space. Then, I found this starpod from Anthropologie and was sold. It’s the perfect piece to bring in a natural element, while also being unique and the perfect size for the shelves. It’s my favorite decor piece I added.
It was a no brainer to add more natural elements with my favorite faux plant from Target. I added it to one of my favorite planters from Pottery Barn, which added even more texture to the shelves. Onto actual storage, ha. I needed to store the kids wash clothes, so I added these baskets from Target. I added some folded towels, beads, bath oils, and these canisters for bath salts.
I am so happy with how the shelves turned out and the added storage they’ve provided in our bathroom.
